Annie Markitanis

Annie Markitanis

Annie Markitanis is Cyprus’s first Certified Eating Disorder Recovery Coach and received her professional certification through the internationally recognized Carolyn Costin Institute (CCI). She is an eating disorders advocate and speaker dedicated exclusively to the field of eating disorders. Having lived in the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Cyprus, she brings an international perspective to recovery, professional collaboration, and multidisciplinary care. She has developed a respected private practice supporting clients from around the world and works closely with multidisciplinary treatment teams across specialties.

Originally trained in Fashion and Visual Arts, Annie’s career evolved toward eating disorders following a Master’s Practitioner training in Eating Disorders in London under Deanne Jade at the National Centre for Eating Disorders. Her creative background continues to inform her approach by integrating narrative, creativity, identity, and lived experience into the recovery process, making it more human, engaging, and personally meaningful while fostering authentic connection. She subsequently served as a mentor with MentorCONNECT, the world’s first global eating disorder mentoring community, before becoming a Certified CCI Eating Disorder Recovery Coach in 2018, training directly under Carolyn Costin.

Drawing on both professional expertise and her own experience of full recovery from an eating disorder more than a decade ago, Annie supports children, adolescents, adults, families, and loved ones affected by anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, ARFID, orthorexia, emotional overeating, body image disturbances, disordered eating, and dysfunctional relationships with food and exercise. Her work is grounded in the belief that full recovery is possible and is guided by the conviction that the very qualities that can sustain an eating disorder can, through recovery, become some of an individual’s greatest strengths.

As Cyprus’s first Certified Eating Disorder Recovery Coach, Annie is also the first professional in the country’s eating disorders field to openly integrate lived experience with professional practice, challenging the longstanding perception that lived experience and professional expertise must remain separate. She is a leading voice advocating not only for being “in recovery,” but for the distinction—and the possibility—of achieving full recovery. Through nationwide lectures, workshops, conferences, public events, and advocacy initiatives, she challenges long-held narratives, reduces stigma, and promotes a more hopeful, evidence-informed, and empowering understanding of eating disorders. She has also established an international practice supporting clients across Europe, the United States, and beyond. She currently serves as Vice President of the Eating Disorders Association of Cyprus and is a founding board member of EASO Cyprus (European Association for the Study of Obesity). She is also the founder of circlED, Cyprus’s first free eating disorder recovery support group for affected individuals and their families and loved ones, an initiative designed to foster connection, accountability, and hope. Beyond support and community building, circlED was created to challenge invisibility and stigma by bringing conversations around recovery into culturally vibrant community spaces.

Passionate about fostering collaboration among treatment professionals, Annie believes that education, certification, and multidisciplinary teamwork are essential to improving outcomes for individuals with eating disorders. In June 2026, she became the International Chair of the iaedp™ Cyprus Chapter, where she is committed to advancing professional excellence, strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration, and expanding evidence-based eating disorder treatment, education, and advocacy throughout Cyprus.

Maricarmen Diaz Juarez

Director of International Affairs

Maricarmen Díaz lives in Mexico City. She dedicated most of her professional career – nearly thirty years – to being a university professor and researcher in the field of Law. Her academic and professional preparation comes with a Law degree, a master’s degree in Higher Education and a PhD in Private Law, so her command of Spanish is at a very advanced level. Since 2015, she started with the Spanish translation of the Eating Disorders Review, and since 2020, she has been part of the iaedp™ team as Director of Language and Translation, being the Spanish face of the association. She likes to think that through her work, she helps valuable information reach more people in Spanish-speaking countries who are seeking treatment for recovery from these complex illnesses. Currently, she also has her own company: Your Business in Spanish, a culturally sensitive Spanish translation specializing in mental health and eating disorders. In her free time, she enjoys reading about personal development and novels by Latin American authors, swimming daily and outdoor activities.
